Housing

Housing in New World allows players to own a plot of land and a residence inside a Territory. Owning a house in a territory makes that player a resident under the guidance of the local Governor and Consuls. The most essential features of Housing include:

  • Decorate houses with items crafted using the Furnishing skill.
  • Trophies in houses provide passive bonuses.
  • Expand settlement storage using Storage Chests.
  • Fast-travel to your houses.

I participated as the main UX designer for this feature. Housing is already a famous feature in many MMORPGs, so there were a lot of games to reference (Sims, Black Desert, Animal Crossing, etc.). In fact, the biggest challenge was to develop this feature in a short amount of time. The key was to create the best yet simplest design possible for quick development, and then to convince the executives to go ahead with this design for development.

Other design challenges included:

  • Within a single plot, many players can reside. However, only one player’s house is publicly visible to others, and showcasing the game mechanic that determines this.
